He robs from the rich and gives to the poor.And it struck me: this could be argued for being incredibly socialist! LOL! Never, ever realized that until just now. But seriously: in the original story, I'm pretty sure there are one or two rich people who are depicted as being fat, greedy jerks but who didn't steal the money that they had: they just weren't willing to share it with the poor. And so Robin Hood and his Merry Men come along and steal this guy's gold. They take all his money on his person, even the gold hubcaps from his carriage, and they give this to the poor. Sounds nice, yes, but ... omfg! XD I can't believe it! This is, like, pure socialism! There's no evidence which suggests that the poor have any right to this rich man's money. There is only evidence -- ample evidence -- that Prince John has overtaxed them and so the Crown owes them money. This means that Robin's final act of robbery in the movie is perhaps the only one which we could ethically justify! ^_^;
To put it into a contemporary perspective, let's say the President of the United States in the year 21xx were to raise the income tax for the poor (who constitute 95% of 22nd-century America) but not for the rich (the other 5%). Let's say he raised the people's income tax by 2%, from 28% to 30%. Let's say the people could no longer afford their basic amenities because of this. Just like in the story Robin Hood, right? So far, so good? Now, let us suppose that an outlaw by the name of Robin Hood comes along and holds Bill Gates IX up at gunpoint, stripping him of all of his clothes and taking his wallet. Would we consider Robin's act ethically just if we later discovered that he sold the clothes and distributed the total cash to the nation's poor? I don't think we would, would we? His goal is a nice goal, but the way he's going about it is victimizing an innocent man! You can't hold Bill Gates IX up at gunpoint and demand money from him if it's money he's inherited from his ancestors and invested wisely! You can rightly label him a big selfish jerk if he has 99 billion dollars to his name and only donates $5000 a year to charities, sure, but you can't say that what he's doing is so wrong it makes him worthy of robbery ...
... or can you? ;) There is one situation which allows us to say that Bill Gates IX is the unethical one and Robin Hood is doing things ethically -- and that's if we argue for socialism! :) ;D lol
Sorry if this sounds really obvious to you guys. Feel free to brag about when you first made the connection. :) Feel free to politely remind me if you yourself told me about this in the past and I (obviously) have long since forgotten all about that. Anyway, just thought I'd share.
P.S. I still love Robin Hood. ;p
