The image was just too cute to resist, but if I posted it all alone, most of you wouldn't get the joke, so here it is.
Part 1: Japan launched a lunar probe named "Kaguya" this week
Part 2: the name "Kaguya" refers to a legendary Japanese princess of the Moon
Part 3: Kaguya is thus a popular girl's name in modern Japan, especially in works of fiction where the girl is in some way similar to the legendary lunar princess
Part 4: the girl tied to the rocket is Kaguya from the Touhou games
While the otaku joke tickles my funny bone, I'm hopeful that most of you will still be interested in at least the first part about Japan launching rockets to the moon. This follows on the heels of Japan's continued creation of a fully-operational navy in the name of "self-defense," which in turn has been the consequence of United States troops spread too thin across the world to guarantee Japan the Constitutionally-promised protection it needs from a full-scale invasion by either the Koreans or the Chinese. It will be very interesting to see whether American-Japanese relations deteriorate or not once Japan can defend itself without American military aid, i.e. to see how true the "friendship" that has been built over the past 60 years is.
