In 1984, Orwell wrote that there are three social classes. We can refer to these three classes (as they very nearly parallel Orwell's own) as the poor, the middle class, and the wealthy. Orwell claimed that this is how social revolution works:
BEFORE THE REVOLUTION:
1. the wealthy are in control
2. the middle class wish they were wealthy and plot to overthrow the wealthy
3. the poor wish they were wealthy too
JUST BEFORE AND DURING THE REVOLUTION:
1. the wealthy do not brace themselves adequately for social upheaval
2. the middle class promise the poor a share of the spoils if the poor help out
3. the poor believe the middle class and help out
DURING THE REVOLUTION
1. the wealthy are toppled
2. the middle class lead the poor
3. the poor are the real war machine which topples the wealthy
AFTER THE REVOLUTION
1. the old wealthy are now the new middle class
2. the old middle class are now the new wealthy
3. the poor, having been tricked and/or being too stupid to make use of any rewards they might in fact have received, swirl back down to the pits from which they came
in a nutshell, the rich and the middle class flip-flop positions ad infinitum while the poor stay poor forever.
So, George, if you'd be so kind ... please explain this: $50/hr for windmill technicians. D:
If this actually goes through, it's going to be one step forward from Welfare but two steps backwards from Social Progress: because this sort of pay incentive is going to lure people away from white collar work which requires more training and pays less and is going to lure them towards blue collar work which is healthy in moderation but in excess will complete America's transformation from world power to world bitch.
