I saw this about a week ago (along with Persepolis) but never finished the Persepolis entry and put this one on hold. I just wanted to get it out.
Synopsis: since most of you have probably already seen Rush Hour before, I'll keep it brief: this is the most famous "buddy cop" film of the late 1990s, taking a black LAPD officer who goes in guns blazin' (Chris Tucker) and partnering him up with the equivalent of Hong Kong's chief SWAT officer (Jackie Chan). The film pokes fun at miscommunication, stereotypical "blackness", stereotypical "Chineseness," etc. As for the plot? Rush Hour is about a Chinese crime syndicate cryptically known only as "Juntao". This syndicate was defeated by Inspector Lee (Chan) in 1997 on the eve of the British handover of Hong Kong back to the mainland Chinese. The syndicate seeks revenge for their defeat and kidnaps the Chinese consul to America's daughter, demanding a ransom of $50,000,000. The Chinese consul requests that Lee come to America to conduct his own investigation; meanwhile, the FBI attempts their own investigation and assigns Agent Carter (Tucker), a demoted LAPD officer who has been told he's been promoted to the FBI, to babysit Inspector Lee and keep him out of the FBI's way.
Review: It was a great entertaining movie and a good movie overall. It's by no means epic or even close to 5-star material but that's largely because of its laidback, stereotypical "Hollywood comedy" presentation. Taken for what it is and compared against other Hollywood comedies, Rush Hour is definitely a classic.
Rush Hour: 4 stars out of 5.
